Assessment of Creative Potential in Psychology and the Development of a Creative Temperament Scale for the CPI

Abstract

This chapter will deal with two topics. The first is the identification of creative potential among graduate students in psychology, and prediction of this potential from biographical and test measures available at the time of entry into training. The second is the development of a scale for creative temperament on the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) (Gough, 1987), capable of forecasting creative attainment in fields other than psychology, as well as within the psychological domain. Although any discipline can be expected to demand certain specific skills and attributes for creative achievement, it also appears that there is a more general constellation of personal qualities cutting across disciplinary boundaries (Amabile, 1983; Barron, 1965; Nelson, 1988; Isaaksen, 1988; & MacKinnon, 1978). Attention will also be paid to similarities and differences in characteristics associated with creativity for men and women (Bachtold & Werner, 1970; Nelson, 1978).
