Immunohistochemical Demonstration of Lactoferrin in Human Neoplastic Tissues
By immunohistochemistry, the distribution of lactoferrin (Lf) as well as other iron-binding proteins has been extensively investigated in normal human tissues such as stomach, kidney, lung, pancreas, liver and bone marrow1. In addition, Lf has been localized in epithelial elements of major salivary glands2 as well as in malignant counterparts3. Moreover, the present of Lf in prostatic tissue has been documented by radial-immunodiffusion in homogenates of prostatic cancer and benign hypertrophy4. In lactating mammary glands as well as in breast carcinomatous tissues, immunohistochemical studies stating the appearance of Lf are conflicting, with a variation in the occurence rate of stained elements1,5,6; however, no relationships have been found between Lf and other prognostic factors such as steroid receptors, histologic type and tumour grade.
