Nb3Sn Multifilamentary Wires and Tapes for High-Field Magnetic Systems

Abstract

We report measurements of the critical current density in fields up to 20 T as a function of conductor design, composition, and microstructure for Nb3Sn bronze-processed wires, internal tin conductors, and superconducting tapes. Our data demonstrate that bronze-processed multifilamentary Nb3Sn wires heat-treated in hydrogen at the final stage as well as multilayer Nb3Sn tapes with overlayers of the Chevrel phase (SnMo6S8) are promising materials for high-field applications.
