Effect of Segregation on the Cryogenic Mechanical Properties of Some Precipitation-Hardened Austenitic Alloys

Abstract

The mechanical properties of commonly melted and low-segregation precipitation-hardened Incoloy 903 and JBK-75 alloys were measured at 77 K. The temperature dependences of yield strength and ductility for the alloys processed by the low-segregation technique differed from those of the commonly melted alloys. The microstructures were examined by TEM and SEM. The size and distribution of the precipitated secondary phases, which could greatly affect the mechanical properties and failure, were changed by the low-segregation processing technique. A new concept regarding the interaction between dislocations and particles at low temperatures is introduced in this paper.
