Experience with a Large Scale He II Refrigeration System at Tore Supra

Abstract

A cryogenic system1,2 which has a capacity of 300 W at 1.75 K, 1000 W at 4 K and 30 kW at 80 K has been operating for more than 10 years. It is used to cool the superconducting toroidal magnet of the TORE SUPRA Tokamak3. The 1.75 K refrigeration stage is constituted by 3 Hell saturated baths (cold sources) linked to the 18 Hell pressurized baths of the toroidal coils. The Hell saturated bath pumping system is achieved part at low temperature by two centrifugal compressors, part at room temperature by two oil ring pumps. This pumping system has a very large pumping range characteristic from 0.003 to 0.040 kg/s and a great operating reliability. The safety devices and protections against quench are peculiar.
