The Assessment and Comparison of Alternative and Traditional Fuels from a Study of the Vehicle’s On-Road Performance and Emissions

Abstract

A Vehicle and Engine Performance Monitoring and Analysis System (VEPMAS) has been under development since 1989 as part of the assessment phase of compressed natural gas buses in Australia.

Since then the analytical capabilities and features of VEPMAS have been enhanced to assist with optimisation of engine conversions and evaluation of fuels such as natural gas and diesel. VEPMAS provides engineers with information on the vehicle’s performance whilst the vehicle is in actual use.

The results are based upon comprehensive engine data from dynamometer tests of the engine fitted to the vehicle or from a similar engine. By logging two independent engine variables when the vehicle is in service, cumulative data can be generated every second to provide total fuel consumption and emissions for a particular bus run, vehicle trip or selected cycle. The results obtained have been validated against actual measurements.

This paper is a non technical description of the concept and operation of the system. Typical results obtained from road trials are presented to demonstrate the output format of the data and to highlight the most importance application aspect of VEPMAS namely its ability to provide a quantitative basis for the comparison of fuels.
