The Cognitive (Mis)perception of the Other
As mentioned at the end of the last chapter, there are three areas in the vygotskian literature that seem to need work and that are treated in this chapter and Chapter 8. In the current chapter, first, a model of the types of sociocultural pressures on the developing individual is presented. It concerns the cognitive (mis)perception of the other. In particular, it is based, on the current 25-step neopiagetian model of cognitive development. Second, I examine the question of whether a neopiagetian theory can coexist with a vygotskian one, especially at the level of the issue of universal stages versus individual differences in cognitive development. In the next chapter, an integrated model of the coappropriation process in cognitive development is presented. It also attempts to integrate the vygotskian and neopiagetian perspectives. Finally, at the end of that chapter, an empirical study is summarized that speaks to the issue of the influence of the level of cognitive (mis)perception of the other when dealing with the other.
