Abstract
A comprehensive, methodical, and objective evaluation of the adolescent with psychoactive substance use disorder (APSUD) is necessary for the development of an effective treatment plan. A detailed assessment of the adolescent, caretakers, and referral systems is important to understanding the functioning of the adolescent in various life domains, his or her motivation for treatment, severity of APSUD, medical and psychiatric comorbidities, and more. This chapter reviews the referral and evaluation process, decisions for triage (patient—treatment matching), and the assessment of APSUDs and other comorbid disorders utilizing rating scales.
