Population Growth and Economic Development

Abstract

Implications of population dynamics for economic development have received considerable attention in the literature—perhaps more than any other population “problem.” What is economic development? What is the distinction, if any, between economic development and economic growth? To what extent does population change affect economic development and vice versa? Is the empirical evidence on these relationships clear cut? Have the views about these relationships changed over time, and if so, in what direction?
