Abstract

This review attempts to give a balanced description of the overall process of fertilization in two species of placental mammal. Although a strictly limited view of fertilization might simply focus on the steps of sperm penetration and activation of the oocyte and restoration of the diploid condition, this essay also considers the preliminaries to a successful meeting of the gametes together with the consequences—in terms of successful embryonic development or otherwise. Because the two species under discussion, pig and horse, have a long preovulatory interval during which the female will stand for mating, it becomes essential to consider the events of sperm transport and storage—and likewise of ovulation and egg transport—before examining interactions between the gametes themselves. The prolonged preovulatory interval also enables analysis of gonadal control of these transport and storage events in the female genital tract and the consequent process of capacitation.
