Visual deprivation is an important and fascinating subject from several points of view: clinical, philosophical, historical, and scientific. Many genéral questions in these areas have been framed over the years in terms of the visual system. This is not surprising, because we are visual animals. If dogs ruled the world, the title of this book would be Olfactory Development. As it is, vision is the most important sense to us, and the first that we think of in discussing scientific and philosophical questions.
