The compound light microscope provides a two-dimensional magnified image of the specimen that allows us to resolve and measure fine details of the specimen structure. The specimen can be positioned (oriented) and focused precisely, and the contrast and brightness of the image can be adjusted to bring out desired features of the specimen structure.*
