Abstract

“Traffic jams caused by tollbooths, accidents, and rubbernecking rank high on the list of ways to ruin an otherwise promising summer vacation,” says Sharon Begley of Newsweek magazine. “Hours lost in traffic jams exceed 27 billion each year.” Moreover, as Begley goes on to explain, “Idling cars and stop-and-go driving add to air pollution and guzzle enormous amounts of gasoline.”
