The concepts we use in thinking about the elements that make up society tend to have this curious feature of combining subjective and objective characteristics. The concept of the individual — a basic and popular component for analysing society — is exceptional in being a pretty objective and unambiguous element. Combinations of individuals are also elements that make up society, and these are both real, in the sense of being observable, and at the same time are subject to interpretation.
