The Five Social Sciences and Their Sister Subjects
It is interesting to ask if the way academic subjects are set out today is an almost inevitable outcome of their development, or whether the picture might just as easily have developed in quite a different way. The history of academic disciplines can be thought of as the subjects evolving along the natural contours that their subject matters suggest. Alternatively, they may be seen as having a highly arbitrary element, and being mainly shaped by individual personalities and other accidental factors.
