Neural systems of the hypothalamus influence many types of behavior, but the most frequently studied behaviors are those closely related to physiological functions (e.g., food and water ingestion and sex behavior). This is true because many areas in the hypothalamus are involved in the regulation of the thermal, hormonal, osmotic, and nutritional balances of the body, and cells in this area are responsive to information arising in the internal and external environments. In addition, however, the hypothalamus is involved in the regulation of somatic activities and modulates activity in other forebrain regions of the brain.
