Experimental Allergic Neuritis and Other Immunologically Associated Peripheral Neuropathies

Abstract

In 1955, Waksman and Adams1 first observed that injection of homologous or heterologous peripheral nerve tissue in combination with killed tubercle bacillus and mineral oil would result in a peripheral neuropathy characterized by demyelinative lesions. These lesions were found only in the peripheral nerves, spinal roots, and ganglia and not in any part of the central nervous system; therefore, these authors proposed the term “experimental allergic neuritis” (EAN) in parallel with the better-known condition “experimental allergic encephalomyelitis” (EAE) produced similarly in the central nervous system by injection of CNS tissue.
