Furfuryl Chloride

Abstract

A 500-ml four-necked flask fitted with mercury-sealed stirrer, dropping funnel, thermometer, and calcium chloride tube was charged with 46.2 g (0.47 mole) of freshly distilled furfuryl alcohol (see p. 43), b.p. 75–77° /15 mm. With gentle stirring 44.7 g (0.56 mole, 20% excess) of pyridine (dried with potassium hydroxide and distilled) was added, and this was followed by 50 ml of dry ether. The flask was cooled with ice and salt and, at a temperature of from −8° to −10°, the mixture was stirred vigorously while a solution of 61.7 g (0.5 mole, 10% excess) of colorless distilled thionyl chloride in 50 ml of dry ether was added dropwise.
