Abstract

Approximately 400,000 open-heart surgeries are performed annually in the United States (1). These patients require specialized intensive care and pose unique challenges for the critical care practitioner. This chapter focuses on the pathophysiology and management of specific problems encountered postoperatively in the cardiac surgical patient.
