Wyn Roberts’ contributions to surface science have been of real significance to the development of structure—reactivity relations and, in particular, to catalysts. I am at some disadvantage in introducing this commemorative volume since it is sometime since I played an active ‘hands on’ role in surface science researches. I can hope, however, that I bring an objectivity to this review, relatively uninfluenced by current emphases or fashion!
