Alkane Derivatives

The use of electron diffraction to study simple alkane chain derivatives is intimately tied with the early history of the technique, beginning in the 1930s and 1940s. A major motivation for this early work was to understand the nature of boundary lubricant films on metal bearings, as well as the nature of Langmuir—Blodgett films. With lubricants, for example, in situ experiments were carried out with RHEED (Thomson and Munson, 1933), as well as transmission diffraction experiments using thin foils (or other films) as the support surface (Lebedeff, 1931; Garrido and Hengstenberg, 1932; Hengstenberg and Garrido, 1932). In some of this work, provisions were also made to heat the sample to study their phase transitions.
