Prestressed concrete is reinforced concrete in which there have been introduced internal stresses of such magnitude and distribution that the stresses resulting from loads are counteracted to a desired degree. For design under the Code, the internal stresses can be introduced by pretensioning (a method of prestressing in which the tendons are tensioned before the concrete is placed) or by post-tensioning (a method of prestressing in which the tendons are tensioned after the concrete has hardened) (Section 2.1).
