Factors Regulating the Androgenic Action of Progestins in Mouse Kidney

It has been known for many years that in mice the kidney of both sexes will respond to androgens with an increase in weight and in the activities of certain enzymes (1,2). More recently, studies from several laboratories have shown that the steps involved in androgen-induced cell activation in the kidney are similar to those occurring in the male reproductive tract (3–6). In this and other testosterone responsive tissues, androgens bind to specific cytoplasmic receptors and the steroid-receptor complex is transferred into the nucleus of the cell. This is followed by increases in RNA polymerase and chromatin template activities and activation of specific genes with the subsequent synthesis of mRNAs and proteins.
