Hydrocarbon Aromaticity and w/o Microemulsions Stabilized by Nonionic Surfactants

  • Chapter
Reverse Micelles

Part of the book series: Forschung Soziologie

Abstract

The aromatic character of hydrocarbons has a pronounced influence on the temperature-dependent behavior of microemulsions stabilized by non-ionic surfactants that have a polyethylene gylol alkyl ether structure.

Calorimetric and spectroscopic investigations indicated that the aromatic hydrocarbons compete to some extent with the water molecules for the binding sites at the ether bridges of the compounds. It is suggested that this competition leads to a reduced hydration of the oxyethylene groups similar to the one observed with an increase in temperature.
