Abstract
The sodium bis-(2 ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) is a widely used product and its behavior in mixtures with oil and water has been extensively studied. The domain of existence of isotropic transparent “solutions” often covers a large region on the oil-rich side of these systems. It is believed that inverse micelles are formed up to unusually large w/o ratios1,3. Erratic results with repeated measurements of self-diffusion on some mixtures of the AOT-decane-water system4 and the results of Rosano et al.5 prompted us to investigate the possible existence of transparent, unstable, but slowly separating emulsions in the region hitherto described as homogeneous. Preliminary observations have indeed indicated that some of the mixtures slowly separate into two phases upon standing6. The latest results of this study are presented here.
