Mitotic Behavior of Epidermal Cells in Pseudocarcinomatous Hyperplasia and in Squamous Cell Carcinoma

  • B. A. Berenbein

Abstract

A fundamental biologic characteristic of the cell is of course its ability to reproduce itself. Since the life cycle of individual cells is much shorter than the life span of a multicellular organism, the dying cells are continuously replaced by new cells. It is cell reproduction which underlies the development and regeneration of organisms (Alov, 1972). The following types of cell reproduction are recognized: mitosis (indirect division), meiosis, endomitosis (endoreduplication), and amitosis (direct division). The most wide-spread mode of reproduction in animals is mitosis.
