Abstract
Chromatography has reached a particularly interesting stage at the start of the 1970’s. Whereas a decade ago gas chromatography could fairly be claimed to stand supreme in terms of performance and ease of use, TLC, and soon afterwards gel permeation chromatography, were beginning to have an impact. More recently, developments which have led to major improvements in column LC and the introduction of chromatography with supercritical mobile phases have further widened the range of separation tools available to the analyst. In this chapter we want to look at these various tools and see where their applicability overlaps and what criteria should be applied in choosing between the alternatives. We will also note the likely developments which may influence the choice in the future.
