Excimer Laser Applications

Until recently excimer lasers have been used almost exclusively in basic research, e.g. to pump dye lasers. However, this is not the only potentially useful application. The output of excimer lasers differs in one aspect quite drastically from all other known uv-light sources, namely fluence, which is number of photons per cm2 and sec. The photons are the same, but the mode of delivery is different. This is basically the reason for a new effect, which, if it holds up to its promises, will radically expand excimer laser use in science, industry, and medicine. This effect is often called “ablative photodecomposition”, but it is also known as the “Srinivasan effect”.
