Traditional thermodynamics was developed prior to the understanding and broad acceptance of the atomistic nature of matter and the crystalline state. The fundamental equations of equilibrium thermodynamics are equally suitable in the description of macroscopic or microscopic phenomena of energy transfer and balance in mechanical or chemical systems. However, meaningful application of thermodynamic quantities and relationships in understanding phase equilibrium cannot be accomplished without full awareness of the nature of the phases under consideration.
