Abstract
Dermatomyositis is a disease of the connective tissues that is characterized primarily by inflammation of skin and muscles. It is uncommon but not rare. Despite its initial description in 1887, the disease went virtually unnoticed in children until relatively recently. Wedgwood et al. (1953)1 and Banker and Victor (1966)2 kindled new interest with their pioneering clinical and pathologic studies. Since that time, there have been an increasing number of clinical reports and a few efforts at etiologic definition.
