Gerardus ‘t Hooft is one of the deepest and most original thinkers in modern physics. As we saw in earlier chapters, his work on the renormalization properties of gauge theories helped establish the Standard Model of particle physics. His work on monopoles led to a deeper understanding of grand unified theories. And he has made many other profound contributions that the physics community continue to explore (but which cannot be explored here for lack of space). For about ten years after 1984, however, ’t Hooft was out of the mainstream of theoretical research in high-energy physics. The discovery of anomaly cancellation by Green and Schwarz led most theorists to investigate superstrings, but ’t Hooft, in his own words, could not quite fathom the fundamental logical coherence of superstring theory. He believed superstring theory presented as many problems as it solved.
