Abstract
Charged particles emit electromagnetic waves even in the case of uniform, linear motion. This effect was predicted by Ginzburg and Frank [1]. The transition radiation which results when a charged particle passes through a plane boundary between two media, as discussed in [1], is a classic example of radiation in the presence of inhomogeneities. Later on, other researchers considered particular features of radiation by relativistic particles, the radiation from a diffuse boundary, from a boundary with a ferrodielectric substance or with a dielectric crystal, the transition radiation in the case of spatial dispersion and under gyrotropic conditions, in the case of inclined incidence of the particle on the boundary, etc.*
