Noise is often defined as unwanted sound. It may be sound produced by an aircraft, punch press, stereo system, etc. In short, what is pleasing sound to one individual may be disturbing noise to another. To characterize sound, two parameters are generally required: sound pressure level and frequency. Examples of primary sound sources are vibrating surfaces and turbulent air (Figure 1-1).
