Abstract

Presentations at this workshop provided an overview of the current frontiers in marine biotechnology policy research and described the multiple opportunities for active participation on the part of the scientific and research community. Discussions highlighted how public policy decisions affect public funding for marine biotechnology research, and how and when scientists and researchers can most effectively participate in the public policy process affecting research, development and commercialization. The range of issues covered from economic and legal aspects to questions of social and ethical concerns. The key policy issue areas include access to marine resources/organisms, intellectual property rights, biosafety and regulatory approaches, coordinated efforts/national and international plans and academic/industry/government cooperation.
