Abstract

The red alga Gracilaria gracilis is a commercially important source of food-grade agar world-wide (Armisen, 1995). In South Africa, it is harvested on a commercial basis from natural populations occurring in Saldanha Bay on the west coast of South Africa (Anderson et al., 1989), and is also cultivated commercially on rafts in this area.
