Acoustics of Percussion Instruments

Percussion instruments have been with man from his earliest days and were central to religious and communications activities. Almost anything that made a sound when struck could be termed a percussion instrument, from a hollowed-out tree trunk to a suspended piece of rock. In those days, no special talents were required, and anybody could make an acceptable sound. Today, percussion instruments have taken on their own complexities and require skills equal to those required by the other instrumental groups.
