Neuronal Localization of the Nerve Growth Factor Precursor-Like Immunoreactivity in the Cortex and Hippocampus of the Rat Brain

Abstract

Several lines of evidence have indicated that the nerve growth factor (NGF) is active not only in the peripheral nervous system but also in the brain. Exogenously administered NGF induced choline acetyltransferase in neonatal rat cortex, hippocampus, septum1 striatum2 and in lesioned mature septum3. NGF receptors were also found in the brain4,5, while NGF mRNA and protein were detected in brain regions which are the targets of the NGF-responsive cholinergic neurons of the basal forebrain nuclei 6–10. NGF injected into cortical and hippocampal regions is transported retrogradely to the nucleus basalis and the medial septum-diagonal band of Broca region respectively11.
