Correlation Methods in Medical Diagnostics

Of the numerous and varied problems which are naturally analyzed using the methods of inverse problems, diagnostics, including medical diagnostics, is perhaps the closest to the now traditional cybernetic schemes. Medicine, as opposed to physiology, does not have as its immediate purpose the biological explanation of the functioning of organs. The achievements of pathophysiology, of course, aid in reliably setting up diagnostics for illnesses and in choosing treatments; nevertheless, properly speaking, medical studies often stop at the level of identifying life-threatening deviations from normal and searching for ways to eliminate them. The complexity of the interacting processes in a living organism is not comparable with the customary problems of physics or chemistry. In biological research it is not generally possible to use simplified descriptions in the form of models with a small number of parameters. Limiting ourselves solely to the aims of diagnostics, we can attempt to use this sort of simplification and describe the functioning of organs in both their normal and various pathological states by ordinary differential equations of low order n,
