Disease Management — General Principles
Discussion to this point has dealt with the investigation of disease in wild animals. One of the basic reasons for studying disease is to assess its significance and, if necessary, to identify methods by which the disease can be influenced in a manner considered to be beneficial. Usually such manipulation involves some attempt to reduce either the frequency of occurrence or the effects of the disease although, in some instances, such as the introduction of myxomatosis into Australia, the opposite effect may be desired. The remainder of this book will deal with methods for the management of disease in free-ranging animals, and management will be considered in the sense of to restrict or to curb the occurrence or the effects of disease. Disease management can be categorized into three broad categories: prevention, control and eradication.
