Abstract

The band structure of the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD’s) is now fairly well understood (Liang, 1986, this volume). Of particular importance is the lowest-lying part of the conduction band which is known to contain a considerable dz 2 character: its energy position seems to be associated with its electronic filling as well as with the c/a ratio of the compound in question. Experimental evidence for such dependence is hereby given for the first time, through room-temperature optical transmission spectra of lithium-intercalated 1T- and 4Hb-TaS2.
