Magnetic Phase Transitions in Acceptor GICs

Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) prepared from transition metal chlorides have the advantage of inserting many graphite layers between sequential magnetic layers, without significantly affecting the structure of these layers. The effects of the graphite layers are to greatly increase the interlayer distance, and reduce the interplanar exchange interaction J′. With a significant reduction of J′, especially in the high stage compounds, we may have the right conditions for observing 2D magnetism.1
