Measuring Organ Dysfunction

Abstract

Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is a clinical pattern of progressive organ dysfunction complicating the post-resuscitative phase of acute illnesses such as shock and severe infection, and is a frequent precursor of death in critically ill patients [1]. MODS is an important clinical entity in the intensive care unit (ICU), as approximately one-third of patients admitted to the ICU will have, or develop, organ failure. Further, mortality is directly correlated to the number of failing organ systems. For those patients with one organ failure, mortality is 16–42% and for those with three or more organ system failure, mortality is 55–100% [2–5]. Many organ dysfunction scales have been developed to measure the severity and course of organ dysfunction. With rare exception, these scales were developed on an ad-hoc basis, without formal validation, and often for single observational or therapeutic studies, to qualitatively describe clinical improvement or deterioration.
