Integration of Solar Power and Building Systems

Sunlight, the energy source that makes all life possible, may someday furnish much of the electricity, heating, and cooling on which modern society runs. To minimize energy consumption in constructing and using buildings, and to integrate them with their surroundings, the conditions best suited to various functions should approach the characteristics of the “solar layer” of the site in which they are located. This possibility provides two major challenges for designers:
  1. 1.

    To design our buildings not only to save energy, but so that they can also eventually be weaned away from dependence on nonrenewable fuels.

  2. 2.

    To use energy wisely; to expect only a “fair share” of locally available renewable fuels, recognizing that such sources are limited even though they are continually available.
