Abstract

Cartographers often construct maps that utilize colors to highlight similar regions relative to a particular feature of interest such as elevation or the amount of annual precipitation. In a similar manner, the activities in this unit focus upon the distinctive behaviors under graphical iteration of functions from a given quadratic class. The resulting colored Mandelbrot map of these behaviors exhibits surprisingly intricate and incredibly beautiful structure.
