Human Factors Revisited

  • Gerry Byrne

Malcolm Brenner kept thinking about the stories of Captains Gary Higby and Don Widman, which Boeing representative Curt Graeber had brought to the attention of the reconstituted Human Factors Group in early 1995. The captains’ first officers, who were piloting the planes, each had a seizure on final approach and stomped hard on a rudder pedal. It could happen again. If the captains had done nothing when their first officers became incapacitated, the 737s they were flying would indeed have rolled until they were inverted, and then they would have crashed.
