Depressed immune function is not considered diagnostic of FAS, despite the fact that children with FAS have very high rates of upper respiratory tract infections and recurrent serious otitis media (SOM). Recurrent SOM is the most commonly encountered infection in children with FAS (see Table 5.1). Urinary tract infections, meningitis, tumors, and myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder, have also been found in conjunction with FAS (Church & Gerkin, 1988; Dahl-Regis & Jayan-Trought, 1986; Johnson, 1981; Knight, Marmer, & Steele, 1981; Steinhausen, Nestler, & Spohr, 1982). Convergent studies in animals clearly support these associations.
