Abstract

The first hunter-gatherers in North America were present at the time mammoths and other large mammals native to the continent rapidly became extinct. These early people may have been at least partly responsible for the extinctions (Martin and Klein, 1984). In this chapter we address some questions about Paleoindian foraging and the possible effect it had on mammoth populations. We also offer suggestions about the nature of the debate that has continued for decades over the cause of the extinction event.
