Abstract

A conventional approach to environmental design evaluation has been that of the professional critic, who assesses a particular setting, drawing upon insights gleaned through perceptual processes particularly attuned to designed environments. This critic is perhaps aided by professional design training, with verbal communications skills and probably an occasional bias (to which we are all equally susceptible). The assessment, more often than not, focuses on the formal, physical, visual attributes of the setting. It is usually addressed to professionals and published in one of the professional design journals, or occasionally appears in the Sunday supplement of major newspapers in a more popularized version.
