Septic Shock in the Elderly

Abstract

In septicemia, it is well-known in animal experiments that endotoxin activates coagulation, fibrinolysis (1), kallikrein systems (4, 10, 15, 17, 19) and the complement cascade (2, 16). This study was performed to investigate retrospectively how sudden and simultaneous activations of the blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, complement and kinin systems occur in septic elderly patients from the time of their admission until shock in order to ascertain the etiology of death in such patients.
