Abstract
That viral induced immune deficiencies (VID) are a major medical problem is dramatically emphasized by the ongoing pandemic of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, the ability to impair the immune system of the host is not limited to the human immune deficiency virus (HIV). The first report that viral infections may be the cause of clinically significant perturbations of immune reactivity was published long before AIDS was even dreamed of. Eighty years ago Clement von Pirquet reported that children with measles showed a transient anergy to tuberculin as evidenced by reduced skin tests. Since this pioneering work a vast array of human and animal viruses have been shown to suppress many parameters of immunological reactivity in infected hosts (for recent reviews, see 1, 27, 28, 32, 36).
